Rejection is a major motif in the novel
A Thousand Splendid Suns. Rejection is first presented when Hosseini describes Mariam's mother and her feelings towards men. Mariam's mother is deeply affected by the rejection of Jalil and these emotions are what drive her to tell Mariam, when she is barely a child, that there is "nothing out there for [Mariam] but rejection and heartache." Describe other examples of rejection in the novel and discuss Hosseini's purpose and the significance of demonstrating such rejection.

Another example of Hosseini's implementation of rejection would be when Jalil basically banished Mariam from his home into Rasheed's home. One can interpret Hosseini's purpose to be that women in that type of culture don't really have a say or opinion in anything; just like Jalil set up her marriage without her consent. The significance is that women need to be educated and need to free themselves from perpetuating chains of sexism. Sexism limits their capabilities, and in doing so, prevents them from accomplishing their goals. Rejection, in a nutshell, is used as a means of degradation, in order to prevent women from climbing up in society.
